Council’s environment and economic development committee chair councillor Neil Jones was on hand when two golden ash trees and three eucalypts were planted and was optimistic about the difference they’d make to the area.

At the time he said he hoped in years to come the trees would “provide shade for children using the skate park”.

“Whether it’s a place children come to play or simply some open space to walk through on the way to and from the shops and school, it’s a key part of helping to make Glenroi a strong community,” he said.

However, since the vandalism Cr Jones has expressed his disappointment.

“The trees were planted as part of a plan to improve the area, however there are some sections of the community who don’t value that,” he said.

Cr Jones said when organising future events or upgrades council would endeavour to involve the community.

“Council is not giving up on this, we will continue to plant trees and continue to maintain them,” he said.

“Hopefully by showing the community we are committed we can develop their trust.”

Cr Jones said vandalism was an ongoing issue in other sections of the city and was a problem all Orange residents needed to address.

“We need people to be our eyes and ears when things like this happen,” he said.

Cr Jones said he hoped there would be a good roll-up of councillors when the council tours the site next month.

“We want to send a message to the community that council cares about them and values their community as much as any other in Orange.”
