Were proper standards of road building applied to this road, and if not why not?
As one of the prime objectives of this road was to relieve Summer Street of heavy through traffic such as semi-trailers, then why was it not built to withstand such traffic irrespective of the numbers of such vehicles as no doubt the majority of ratepayers would have expected ?
Someone has be accountable for this disgusting waste of hundreds of thousands of dollars of ratepayers’ money, and we do not want the person or persons responsible for this building any more roads if they are incapable of building a road in Orange that will not last for a substantial time period.
This criticism also applies to the road to the airport, from Huntley through to Spring Hill and to the Orange City Council boundary near Millthorpe, a road that if some councillors have their way will be servicing an industrial site and will need to carry many more heavy vehicles, a plan I am definitely opposed to. This road is littered with patched up potholes and many are breaking up. Having towed a trailer over it recently I was not impressed.
Stop blaming the weather and/or traffic for these roads and build them to a satisfactory standard to withstand our weather and traffic conditions.
Generally, roads in our area do quite well, although good ones without potholes are getting harder to find lately with the possible exception of those finished with hot mix.
Mayor John Davis’ comments that he is “sick and tired of people giving running commentary on the roads” belittles the OAM award that was presented to him, I presume, for service to local government by those very Australians that made it possible for him to receive it. After all, as mayor of Orange his role is to listen to all comments from Orange citizens whether he agrees with them or not and to represent these citizens at council meetings.
The Roads and Maritime Services should have been in the past and should be in the future a partner in the maintenance of this road as considerable through traffic uses it.
As for our local member Andrew Gee, he should be assisting us in getting ongoing support, be it financial or with maintenance assistance, for this road due to the heavy use it gets from through traffic. The RMS is therefore saving on maintenance for the section of highway that is not being used by such traffic and should assist us with some funding.
