The piece of NSW transport history has been touring around the central west for the past week, and yesterday offered Orange residents two short trips to Spring Hill and return in carriages preserved from the 1930s.
Hundreds of people lined the platform at the station to admire the coal-fired locomotive built in 1926, with another 650 taking the hour-long trips to Spring Hill, filling the train to capacity.
For youngster Cody Wise, the journey aboard Locomotive 3642 was extra-special.
Cody’s family bought him a trip aboard the train for his fifth birthday, which he celebrated on August 12, with nine family members taking the ride with him.
Cody’s mother Wendy said her son loved the journey.
“Cody’s always wanted to go on a train. This is his first train ride,” Mrs Wise said.
“There was a helicopter following us on the way to Spring Hill, taking photos. The kids thought that was pretty good.”
The five-year-old said his favourite part about the train ride was the horn, and was pleased when he was able to hop inside the engine room to see how the steam engine worked.
“It was hot in there,” he said.
The locomotive will be in Bathurst on Friday, providing short return journeys from Bathurst to Wimbledon.
