The sale eclipsed the long-standing Perth record to become the nation's most expensive home and could boost the value of Australia's other trophy homes, particularly in the Harbour City.

Here is how Australia's top 10 house sales stand, with nine of them all set in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

James and Erica Packer have sold their Vaucluse mansion for a new Australian house price record.

James and Erica Packer spent $30 million acquiring three properties in Sydney's Vaucluse, before spending another $40 million to build the six-storey mansion La Mer.

The property sold to Australian-Chinese billionaire businessman Chau Chak Wing.

The previous high was set in 2009 when iron ore heiress Angela Bennett sold her cliffside mansion overlooking the Swan River.

The Mosman Park home was purchased by mining magnate Chris Ellison and his wife Tia.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $65.5 million.

The waterfront Italianate villa's sale price was made in two instalments, with only the initial $44 million showing on title records, but it was long credited as Sydney's top price after documents were shown to Domain of a second $9 million transfer.

It was sold by recruitment entrepreneur Andrew Banks and his wife Andrea to dentist David Penn and his wife Linda in 2010.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $59 million.

In 2013, Deke Miskin and his wife Eve sold their waterfront mansion to a Chinese buyer, who remained anonymous until a Domain exclusive earlier this year revealed the buyer to be Chinese businessman Wang Zhijun.

Secrecy had surrounded the purchase through a family trust linked to a Melbourne family because at the time Mr Wang was a temporary 457 visa and did not have Foreign Investment Review Board approval to buy the established residence.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $54 million.

When the late David Coe sold his 4100-square-metre waterfront trophy residence in 2008, it set a national record. Settlement records later revealed the buyer to be expat currency trader Ivan Ritossa and his wife Marina.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $52.8 million.

Earlier this year, the non-waterfront trophy residence of former tobacco executive Bill Webb and his wife Marijke sold within three months to road construction and eco-resort developer Phillip Dong Fang Lee and his wife Zhi Xiaobei.

This year, the limestone palazzo formerly owned by recruitment industry boss Julia Ross made headlines around the world when the buyer, Chinese billionaire Xu Jiayin, was forced by Treasurer Joe Hockey to divest it because it was bought without Foreign Investment Review Board approval.

It resold within months for the same price to well-connected Sydney woman Lola Wang Li, wife of high roller Li Liang.

Former Multiplex chief Andrew Roberts and his wife Andrea sold their waterfront home in April this year in lieu of their upcoming move to Bondi Beach, where they set a national apartment record of $25 million for their super-penthouse.

The Double Bay mansion was bought by billionaire property tycoon Seng Huang Lee and his wife Peggy Yeoh Pei Chee.

Last year, property developer Ron Medich finally offloaded his waterfront property after a three-year sales campaign, which was not helped by his ongoing trial in connection with the murder of his business associate Michael McGurk.

It was bought by aged-care industry boss Peter Wohl and his wife Jennifer.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $37.6 million.

In 2013, the residence best known as the Bang & Olufsen house for its distinctive designer aesthetic was sold by Network Seven commercial director Bruce McWilliam and his wife Nicky into the name of accountant Christopher Walker.

It's widely known to be legally owned by Jerry Qiu Yafu, the chairman of Chinese textile maker Shandong Ruyi Science and Technology Group.

Sale price adjusted for inflation: $34.4 million.

The highest recorded Victorian residential sale stands at $26 million for the grand Portsea cliff-top estate Ilyuka, which sold in 2010 to BRW rich-lister John Higgins.

But Melbourne has the country's most expensive apartment, with the penthouse of the city's tallest skyscraper, Australia 108, selling for $25 million in April this year.

It shares that crown with Sydney where a $25 million apartment sold at Bondi Beach.

Before that sale, the previous metropolitan Melbourne residential record was set by soft-drink magnate Harry Stamoulis, who paid $24 million in 2010 for the former Baillieu family home in St Georges Road, Toorak.

The house has since been knocked down to make way for a mega-mansion that is rumoured to have cost up to $70 million. 

After more than a year on the market, the Smorgon family's Toorak mansion at 750 Orrong Road also found a buyer with $20 million in 2014. 

"Millionaire's row" on the Gold Coast is where you'll find Queensland's record prices.

The glitter strip pad at 213 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach, set the state's record in 2006, when Harvey Norman's Queensland boss splashed out $19 million on the beachfront residence.

The record is set to be challenged by the sale of a neighbouring six-bedder at 45-51 Albatross Avenue, where former Billabong director Scott Perrin and wife Rachel are selling up.

The price for the  2833-square-metre home is tipped to hit $30 million.
