THEY’VE come a long way in 2015, and Confederates will today continue to prove they’re anything but women’s Premier League Hockey easybeats when they tackle St Pat’s in Bathurst.
The red and blues have scored eight goals in their last two games - incredibly doubling the total they’d put past opposition goalkeepers in their previous 12 games - and in-form midfielder Annabelle Tierney is confident as long as Feds continue to find a way to score, the wins will follow.
And she’s hoping that’s as soon as today’s game against St Pat’s.
“We were struggling goal-wise early on in the season,” Tierney said.
“But our attack has gotten better, [coach] Mark [Pengilly] has been great at training with us working on the power behind our shots. We’re scoring goals now and the confidence of the girls is improving.”
Tierney, 16, has played no small part in helping Feds improve either.
One of a band of youthful players helping shoot the PLH battlers off the bottom of the ladder, the year 11 Kinross Wolaroi School student’s speed through the middle third of the field has helped give both time and space to the likes of Ally Thurn, who banged home three goals in Feds’ breakthrough 4-2 win over Zig Zag.
A representative of the Combined Independent Schools open hockey side that competed at the NSW All School tri-series at Sydney Olympic Park, Tierney says she’s enjoyed the leadership role she’s picked up at Confederates in 2015.
“As a whole we’re a really young side this year, but I think each player leads in their own right,” she said.
“There’s a few senior girls we’ve got who’ve really helped me learn how to be a good leader this year, and I think we’re improving as a group because of those girls.
“[Moving over from Kinross-CYMS at the start of the year), I was a bit hesitant but the club has been extremely welcoming and the atmosphere is so positive. I’ve really enjoyed the season.”
Feds tackle St Pat’s from 12.20pm.
