EMERGING sporting talent Jack Cole is enjoying a calendar year to remember, earning selection in the 2015 NSW Primary Schools Sports Association open boys’ touch football team.
The year six student cracked the state’s primary school touch footy team after blitzing the trials with his blistering speed, a trait that’ll be on show today when the Orange Public School’s open boys’ rugby league team guns for the title of best in the west.
OPS hosts Gulgong Public School in the Western Primary Schools Sports Association knockout final today at Wade Park.
Accumulating an impressive list of wins, OPS has defeated Calare, Bletchington and West Wyalong before accounting for Wallerawang in emphatic fashion, winning the semi-final encounter 40-6, to qualify for today’s grand final.
OPS rugby league coordinator Michael Kelly believes his side’s previous round results point towards a strong showing from 12pm at Wade Park today.
“We’ve won all of our games by about 40 points,” Kelly said.
“We’ve had great support by the parents of the boys in the team. Wayne Hill has helped coach and he’s been fantastic.
“We’re reasonably confident of doing well.”
Aiding Kelly’s optimism is the quality of his team.
No OPS boys’ outfit - not even the one that included now Canberra Raiders fullback Jack Wighton - has made it to the Western PSSA knockout final, while this side was also crowned champions at the Orange leg of the Peachey Shield before going down in the regional final in Dubbo.
After today’s decider the team will also take part in the Legends Shield at Macquarie University Playing Fields against the other winning teams from regions around NSW on August 19.
