THE 2015 Central Western District Golf Association grass greens championship is on Sunday at Duntryleague, and secretary Peter Mitchell is predicting a group from Dubbo to throw a cat amongst the pigeons.
On their home course, the obvious names of Rob Payne, Rob Parfett and Wayne Carpenter will surely challenge for the crown.
But Mitchell says Ross Horrocks and Pat Wilson are equally capable of turning it on come tee-off on Sunday morning.
So much so, he’s backing the Dubbo boys.
“They’re a real hope,” Mitchell said.
“Ross plays off scratch and Pat off about plus one or two. He’ll go alright I reckon. It’s going to be very interesting to see how it pans out.”
Mitchell was thrilled a large contingent of golfers were making the trip east to Duntryleague for the grass greens championship, rotated annually between the Orange club and Wellington’s 18-hole course.
However, numbers were somewhat disappointing so far, with just “40 or 50” scheduled to tee off come Sunday morning.
Long bomber Paul Bright, from Bathurst, is on the list but golfers from Wellington and Forbes, as well as Cowra, aren’t making the trip to club championships being run concurrently with the grass greens tournament.
Mitchell said it was hard to effectively schedule the calendar to accommodate everyone, but was confident the 2015 championship would still be a strong tournament.
“We’ve had it for years. It’s been around for 30 years but people obviously have a few things on and the numbers are a bit light on at the moment,” he said.
“It’s snow season, and that may be keeping a few people away.
“The greens are in sensational condition at the moment though. They’re playing really well. I can’t wait.”
Anyone interested in taking part in the CWDGA grass greens championship can ring the Duntryleague pro shop to enter.
Cost is $30, which includes lunch.
