The TAFE Western Orange open day was mostly aimed at year 10 students and their parents/guardians to see what TAFE-delivered vocational education and training (TVET) courses are available in town.
TAFE Western education officer VET in schools Jacquie Smith said the open day provided the perfect opportunity for potential students to explore the career options that are available through TAFE.
“The main focus of the open day is to introduce TVET to the year 10 students, giving them more viable career options to consider before they select their subjects for years 11 and 12, and of course once they’ve completed school,” Ms Smith said.
“The open day will offer a firsthand look at TAFE Western’s state-of-the-art facilities, as well as providing access to TAFE teachers and student engagement officers who can address any questions students may have, including advice on courses, mobile learning options and much more.”
Ms Smith said it was the first time in years the open day had been held in Orange.
“The job expo didn’t occur in Orange, it was a great platform for us here in Orange so I thought why not open it up to the public, year 10, 11, and 12 students?” she said.
“They could see what it’s like. It’s an adult learning environment, different to schools, but they can include it as part of their HSC.”
Paul Cozens and Daniel Maxwell from Canobolas Rural Technology High School were among the year 10 students to check out the TAFE facilities after school.
Paul was considering the electro technology course, which could lead to a career as an electrician, while Daniel wanted to do the automotive course.
“There’s a lot more facilities at TAFE,” Paul said.
