Orange Local Court heard on Tuesday the man was released from prison in February this year after serving time for a similar violent domestic assault on another female.
The man was arrested after police claim a verbal argument between the man and his 10-week pregnant partner had escalated.
Police allege on July 18, while the woman was on the floor nursing her two- year-old child from another relationships, the accused punched and kicked the victim before going to the kitchen and returning with a knife, threatening the woman by holding it to her face.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Phil Donato opposed bail saying he had concerns for the safety of the victim if the man was released into the community, while waiting for his next court appearance.
“He also has previous breaches of bail and failure to appear in court,” Mr Donato said.
He outlined the violent attack in court.
“After the verbal argument the accused grabbed the victim by the hair and punched her several times to the head and to the body before kicking her,” he said.
The accused’s legal aid solicitor Bob Lulham told the court his client had handed himself in at Orange police station following the assault.
“He made full and frank admissions,” Mr Lulham told the court.
Magistrate Terry Lucas refused bail saying the accused posed an unacceptable risk taking his antecedents into account.
He will next appear in court via audio visual link in mid August.
