The CultureHub will host the event on Saturday, July 18 and steering committee member Matias Vaira, of Argentina, is calling on other residents of Latin American heritage to join in.
To share his own culture Dr Vaira, a doctor of economics, will bring empanadas, meat wrapped in pastry, and locro, a stew with corn, vegetables and meat.
The dinner will also feature salsa/cumbia dancing, Latin American food, music and children’s craft activities at the Senior Citizens’ and Pensioners’ Centre from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.
Dr Vaira came to Australia 10 years ago and he and his wife and children have lived in Orange for a year.
“I got a job here with the DPI [Department of Primary Industries]. We always try and live regionally because we think it’s better for the kids to grow up in a small town. I came from a small town in Argentina,” he said.
However, since coming to Orange he has not met any other Latin Americans.
“From what I know there’s a few, but I’ve never met them,” he said
“It would be great to make connection with more local residents who want to be part of the planning and be part of the activity. Our final planning session will be held on Monday, July 13 at 5.30pm in the foyer at 79 Kite Street, and all are welcome.”
Orange City Council migrant support officer Anni Gallagher said people from Columbia, Cuba, Brazil and Mexico have expressed interest in the event and although they are seeking more contributions from Latin American residents, anyone can attend the dinner.
People can bring a plate to share and wearing cultural costumes is encouraged, but not essential.
