IT doesn’t matter how old you are or what position you play, for Group 10 players of all generations there’s nothing better than beating Group 11.
The rivalry is almost Origin-esque.
And for a group of under 13 kids - headlined by Orange guns Angus Wilson (Bloomfield), Addison Williams (Bloomfield), Ben Blimka (Bloomfield), Liam Kennedy (CYMS) and Ben Norris (CYMS) - about to tackle the 2015 CRL southern cluster in Tumut, that’s exactly the challenge.
Group 10 under 13s coach Martin Power said there’s a healthy rivalry between the two sides, with Group 10 and Group 11 set to go head-to-head this morning in the Riverina stronghold.
“There is, yes,” Power laughed.
“And there’s a healthy rivalry between Group 10 and Group Nine, they’re a strong region as well.”
Today Group 10 will play Group 20 and Group 11, before backing up tomorrow and playing Group Nine northern and Group Nine southern in consecutive games to wrap up the cluster.
It’s a tournament Power says Group 10 uses to help launch its best young talent into the championships at an under 14 level.
“It’s basically to develop the kids for the next age group when they head off to the country championship,” he said.
“We have them in under 12s as well, so we use the two years to give the kids a taste of rep footy.”
Power said the Orange contingent in his squad would help lead the two blues throughout a tough campaign.
“They all go really well,” he said, Blimka the side’s five-eighth, Norris and Wilson wingers and Williams the team’s fullback.
“They’ve all played in the under 12s last year except for Liam Kennedy, who has come into the second row this year and has been very strong for us.”
Jesse Buchan (Bloomfield), Jake Sargent (CYMS), Caleb Navale (CYMS), Jake Morgan (Bloomfield) and Liam Anderson (Bloomfield) are part of the Group 10 under 12 side also playing in Tumut this weekend.
