Some stunning photographs were produced in Jude Keogh’s pinhole photography class. It amazes me that the children actually made their own camera in the class and then took remarkable photos without any use of technology.
Keogh is a gifted photographer, who can inspire her students and instruct them well.
Everyone’s camera worked really well. They experimented with different exposure times varying from 20 seconds to around 50 seconds. The students learnt how to tell by the look of the photo negative if the photo needed a longer or shorter exposure time.
Being in the darkroom and seeing their photos appear in the developing tray was a highlight, which the children enjoyed enormously. It is like magic.
I would like to congratulate Gemma and Olivia L’Estrange on their photos. Gemma’s photo is a dramatic shot of the back steps of the gallery with a lone figure and the massive she-oaks. Olivia captured the great lines and geometric shapes of the gallery building.
Bill Tink’s classes were delightful as usual and fully booked. The children made wildly imaginative sculptural creatures, by using a wire armature for the body and modelling compound for the head and feet. A huge variety of colourful beads and things were used to complete the sculptures.
Zentangling was a new addition to the program. Laretta Goodacre said her class was a joy to teach, that they were self-directed young learners who were inventing their own patterns for this highly decorative, elaborate art form. The children told me it was very relaxing and better than playing on an iPad. Zentangling is a transferable skill, which they can apply to other images they wish to celebrate.
We have a few places available in next week’s classes, please visit the website for more information - www.org.nsw.gov.au and contact gallery staff for bookings on 6393 8136.
Next Thursday at the gallery, Andrew Flatau, the curator of The poetry of space: the art of Tim Winters, will give a short talk to contextualise Tim Winters’ place in modern art before engaging the artist himself in a discussion of his work. This should prove a fascinating exchange for anyone interested in the art practice and visual language of such a sensitive and perceptive artist.
Audience participation will be encouraged and, fortified by the legendary gallery vittels, we will spend quality time with the artist and his work in the Alan Sisley Gallery.
For details and bookings please phone gallery staff on 6393 8136.
