Although Christmas is almost six months away the volunteers helped gather and prepare items to be sent in October as part of Operation Christmas Child through the not-for-profit organisation Samaritan’s Purse.
Event organiser Robyn Hicks said the items sorted on Saturday would be packed into boxes and sent to children living in the Pacific Islands or South East Asia in countries affected by war, conflict, natural disaster or poverty.
“It went really well, we had eight people come and we made items of clothing, we covered shoeboxes, made jigsaw puzzles and sorted items,” she said.
“We probably won’t start packing boxes until August.”
Mrs Hicks said the boxes would include hygiene items, educational items, something to love, something to play with and something special, with items including toothbrushes, soap, hairbrushes, pencils, exercise books, clothing, soft toys, dolls, yoyos, toy cars, sunglasses, stickers and craft kits.
The next Samaritan’s Purse working bee will be held on Saturday, July 18, at the Christian Ministry Centre at 560 Cecil Road.
