Student Nathan Hines won $500 for the school with an ad he designed for Dom Westgeest Roofing as part of the Junior Press Local Kids Designing Ads for Local Businesses competition.

The $300 second place prize went to Cargo Public School for an ad designed by student Caitlyn Roy for Stainbusters. 

Calare Public School won $200 for  the third placed ad for Roberts Bakery designed by students Sally Eslick, Annie Sidlo, Monique Burns and Sarah Patton.

Spring Hill Public School teacher Ann Marie McAnulty, known to her students as Mrs Mac, said the school’s six year 6 students took part in the competition and drew designs on paper but also used computers to create designs with the top two ads selected to be run in the competition.

She said the activity gave them a chance to work on computer and design skills, learn about what ads involve and how to follow a brief.

“They had the briefing from Dom Westgeest, of course they wanted to use other colours but it was black and white and grey,” Mrs McAnulty said. 

She said about half an hour a day for five days was dedicated to the project with two of the best ads sent in for the Junior Press competition.

“The kids really enjoyed it,” Mrs McAnulty said.

Nathan, said he enjoys drawing and was surprised to win.

“I kept reading [the briefing] to myself and I came up with the idea,” Nathan said.

He said during the planning he decided to plan the ad around the shape of a hexagon and he spent time paying attention to detail and making sure it was neat.

Nathan nominated his prize money to go towards his school robotics club with has a Robo Cup event coming up next term and the money will help them buy a robotics mat for the challenge.
