Although fertility preservation may be a hot topic internationally, the Canberra Fertility Clinic is throwing cold water over some of the myths emerging from debate.

Specifically, the notion younger women should freeze their eggs to pursue their career.

Scientific director Chris Copeland said he's concerned with the information women are receiving.

"There has been a lot said about it, and we feel a lot that has been said is inaccurate," he said.

"It's come about through these high-profile companies like Google offering their young female employees money to get eggs stored.

"As far as we're concerned, that's a gimmick."

Dr Copeland said he would encourage more women to have children, and then have a career.

"It works a lot better that way – biology wants you to do it that way," he said.

The Canberra Fertility Clinic held a public seminar earlier this week to inform men and women of the pros and cons of developing technology in fertility preservation.

"At 38 fertility falls precipitously, and at 38 if she hasn't got children at that stage and she's planning to do it, that's when she should freeze her eggs," Dr Copeland said.

"We've heard anecdotally of fathers saying the best birthday present they could give their 21-year-old is egg freezing.

"That's complete rubbish, complete and absolute rubbish."

The Deakin clinic sees about 500 fertility people per year and Dr Copeland estimates about 2 per cent of those inquire about fertility preservation.

Aside from cancer patients or medical reasons for accessing fertility preservation, men access the service if they're being deployed overseas and their partner would like to conceive while they're away.

For women, the reasons are more likely to be social, such as waiting for Mr Right or pursuing a career.

Although the technology to cryopreserve oocytes, or egg cells, has improved dramatically over the past five years, oocytes are more sensitive to cryopreservation than embryos.
