Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program team leader Tania Martin said the information session in Post Office Lane would ensure people had up-to-date information on the drug, and how users could access treatment.

“It’s crucial that awareness continues to be raised in the community regarding ice and the devastation it can cause to people and their families,” she said.

“Both national and a statewide anti-ice advertising campaigns are currently underway to increase this awareness.”

Ms Martin said organisers of the 12-week (MERIT) program, which offers intensive drug and alcohol treatment to people with criminal charges, have seen an increase in the number of ice users in the past 12 months.

“Staff from the MERIT program are now seeing an increase in crisis work, unpredictable behaviour in clients and an increase in injecting use,” she said.

“Methamphetamine (ice) use is destructive to both individuals and their families so significant time is being provided in the provision of support to clients and their families.”

Ms Martin said the information day, which runs from 10am to 2pm, is an ideal opportunity for people to source information.

“Staff from the MERIT program and the Lyndon Community will be on hand to answer any queries or to provide details of drug and alcohol services available in the community,” she said.
