Staff at Orange PCYC want to foster this curiosity and for the past few years have let kids pull apart old electronics like computers and printers during their school holiday activity programs.
But it is hard for staff to keep up supply with the demand of inquisitive kids, so manager Geoff Potts is asking Orange residents to donate any old gadgets they might have lying around the house.
“We get them to pull things apart during craft time. Kids love pulling things apart and seeing what’s inside them, they love seeing how things work,” Mr Potts said.
“Usually we have something like one printer to ten kids, so it can be a bit hard for everyone to get a fair go.”
Mr Potts said anything from DVD players, vacuum cleaners and CD players would be accepted, working or not working, but old cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions cannot be accepted due to safety risks.
“We’re asking anyone who might have an old electrical item lying around to donate it. We’re always accepting new items, we can never get enough,” Mr Potts said.
Every weekday during the holidays, from June 29 to July 13, the PCYC runs activities for primary school children, from 8.30am to 5.30pm.
Ball games, gymnastics, craft activities, science experiments, excursions to the cinema and a cartooning workshop are some of the activities scheduled for the July break.
Children can be booked in for full days for $33 or morning or afternoon sessions for $18, however some activities incur an extra cost.
Bookings are essential. For more information about activities or donating electrical goods, call 6360 2249.
