Madeleine Owens, Jacinta Smith, Kate Burdack and Victoria Smith will next week fly to Connecticut in the United States to represent Australia at the world final of the 2015 Kids Lit Quiz, where they’ll compete against schools from New Zealand, Canada, America, South Africa, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

After knocking off three-time champions Canberra Grammar at the national final, the OHS girls were officially farewelled from Orange at a mayoral reception on Tuesday and were unanimous in their response when asked how they were feeling about the opportunity to represent both Australia and Orange on the world stage.

“Excited,” the foursome said, a trip to the International Literature Conference and tour of Mark Twain’s house also on the 10-day agenda.

“We’ve been reading a lot of different books,” Madeleine added.

And by lots, they mean hundreds.

Jacinta says she’s been reading at every available opportunity for the last 12 months - the fact she can use such knowledge to compete in an international event is a bonus.

Jacinta does it mainly because she enjoys reading.

“Our mum got us into reading at a young age and we’ve kept going,” Jacinta said.

Looking at books by authors they’re meeting at the conference, the OHS team is banking on The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick being one of the quiz master’s main focus questions.

“Often they’re really long winded questions too,” Madeleine added.

“At the national final [the quiz master]just started reading the first page of the book and you had to buzz in and tell him the title of the book.”

OHS principal David Lloyd said it’s “incredibly exciting” for everyone involved.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the kids to be able to show in their talent, these guys have a particular vent for literature, so it’s wonderful to see an opportunity for them to shine in that way,” he said.
