Orange’s migrant population had the chance to pick Sydney-based solicitor and migration agent Besmellah Razaee’s brains on the ins and outs of family visas and refugee law on Monday afternoon.
Orange City Council migrant support officer Anni Gallagher said it was the first time in “a very long time” a migration agent had held an information session in Orange.
She said the session helped about 20 migrants access up-to-date information and said many often found the visa system confusing.
“Access to affordable legal advice is important, and many want to bring their families over, or reconnect with relatives,” Ms Gallagher said.
“For most of [the people that attended] it was enough to ask general questions about visas, and for those who needed more in-depth information, they could then set up a one-on-one session with him the next day.”
She said Mr Razaee also spoke about the recent changes in visas, like the increase in fees from July 1, and changes to refugee protection laws.
Ms Gallagher said she hoped further visa and migration information sessions could be held in Orange.
