Orange was coming off a thrilling victory in the preliminary final over Bathurst that morning, but being forced to play two sudden death finals in one day proved too much for the Eagles as they succumbed to Griffith - who only played one game on the Sunday - 79-56.
“We came back from five points down with not long left to win against Bathurst, so we’d already had a rollercoaster game before the final,” Orange coach Tristan Harrison said.
“I don’t think they have done it that way before, but because there was so many divisions we had to play the first game at 8am on Sunday.”
The Eagles threatened a late comeback late in the decider, but led by Blake Schaefer - who scored a game-high 38 points - the much taller Demons snuffed out the resurgence with a 27-point final quarter.
Griffith, having gone through the preliminary stages with just two losses - both to Orange - established its dominance early in the match-up, going into the first break with a seven point advantage.
Orange was its own worst enemy in the first half, consistently missing shots as the Demons doubled their lead in the second period, with tall timbers Schaefer and Nathan Richards - who dropped 15 points - proving nigh on unstoppable in the paint.
Orange fought back in the third, and on the back of Matt Gray and Justin Parish the Eagles looked like they had reduced the deficit to eight going into the final break.
But, in transition, Griffith’s Jack Favell drained a clutch buzzer beater from beyond the arc - his only points for the game - to extend the Demons’ lead to 11, and kill off any Orange momentum going into the fourth.
Griffith dominated the final quarter, completing a clinical 23 point win.
“I’m still happy with the way everyone played,” Harrison said.
“It was a real team effort to get as far as we did, and they put everything into it. Our captain Joe Miller won the MVP award too. He lead the team around really well.”
