ORANGE’S all-conquering under 14 team did just as they were expected to on Sunday, winning the Waratah Western Junior League title easily.
The Eagles went through the preliminary rounds undefeated before easily accounting for Griffith in the major semi-final, before again knocking off their nearest opposition in the grand final.
New South Wales Country representative Jay Cole knocked down 16 points in the semi-final victory, before fellow representative stars Zak Simons and Ben Matthews drained 25 and 12 points respectively in Orange’s 56-37 grand final win.
“Jay, Zak and Ben led us around really well, but it was a really good team effort,” Orange coach Grant Cole said.
“I thought Jayden Baker really stood out, as did Andrew Gogola, but everyone in the side played very well.
“I was pretty happy with all of them throughout the competition.
“We started the semi-final a little bit slowly, but got on top after that. Griffith came at us hard in the final, and really put it to us for the first half or so which was really good to see, but the boys got away toward the end.”
Orange also won the under 16 boys’ division two title, almost identically to the under 14 side.
The Eagles defeated Griffith in the major semi-final, 62-44, before a 25 point haul from Cooper Tarleton led Orange to a comfortable 70-53 win over the Demons in the division’s top game.
Orange’s other sides performed with aplomb, with the Eagles under 12 boys going down to Narrandera in the division two grand final, the under 14 girls coming third in division two, the under 16 girls losing the division one grand final to Bathurst and the under 18 boys finishing second in division one and fifth in division two.
