A MAN-OF-THE-MATCH performance from Orange Emus winger Carter Hirini inspired his side to a comfortable 30-10 victory over Forbes on Saturday, the greens' first away win of the 2015 Blowes Clothing Cup.
Question marks remained over Emus' mettle on the road after the greens succumbed to Parkes, at North Parkes Oval, in a tough 18-17 loss, but Saturday's victory over the Platypi put any doubts to bed.
Hirini scored three of his side's five tries in the 20-point victory, with Emus skipper Nigel Staniforth saying "none (of Hirini's) were from less than about 70 metres out".
Two of the flying winger's five-pointers came in the first period, along with one for swashbuckling prop Nas Havealeta.
With Staniforth converting one, and Forbes only crossing once through Josh Coulthurst, Emus took a 17-5 lead in the half-time break.
"We started really well," Staniforth said.
"Our defence in the first 20 minutes was fantastic, and I think Carter probably scored both of his first half tries on the back of it."
The second half was all Emus, with the greens running in another two tries - through Hirini and fullback Isaac White - with playmaker Adam Perri also kicking a penalty goal.
Forbes winger Matt Simmons managed to grab a five pointer of his own, but to no avail as his side lost out 30-10.
"To get a bonus point win over here, we'd take it any day of the week," Staniforth said.
"We played some pretty good footy, it would've been a bigger margin if I'd kicked a bit better, but you get that.
"More than anything, I'm pleased we stayed in the game for 80 minutes. Forbes kept coming at us, and coming at us, but we stuck at it and held them out.
"We're very pleased with the win."
Somewhat worryingly for Emus Staniforth - who was a talisman at inside centre in 2014, and for the opening four rounds this year - went off late in the second half with a hamstring complaint.
"It's not serious I don't think," he said.
"Just a twinge, just enough to really annoy you to be honest."
