The Blayney Health Council “know the signs and encourage the talk” forum is in response to a community survey that quizzed residents to identify youth health matters that concerned them.
The survey found parents did not know how to recognise and respond to triggers or how to start a conversation concerning issues such as bullying and sex.
“The forum has come about from community consultation and a 2014 Blayney Health Council community survey,” Blayney Health Council chair Suellen Cook said.
“Feedback from the community identified a need for parents to gain information and tools to assist them in identifying triggers in their child’s behaviour that may indicate their child is experiencing problems in their lives that may impact on their wellbeing.”
The forum will feature presenters and displays from headspace, Lifeline and other organisations, with trained staff available to answer any questions parents may have on the night.
“The objectives for having such a forum are to provide parents with information, tools and skills through qualified professionals so that parents can gain the confidence to firstly initiate a conversation with their child, keep the conversation flowing,” Ms Cook said.
The forum will be held at the Blayney Shire Community Centre on Wednesday, May 13 from 6pm.
