THE state’s best junior motocross riders will converge on Newhaven Park for this weekend’s second round of the NSW Motocross Junior State Titles and Canobolas Motorcycle Club president Anthony Corby says he and the rest of the club is ready for the massive influx of competition.
Over 200 competitors aged between four and 16 will lap the club’s first class track off Burrendong Way, and after working for close to four years to help improve the standard of the surface and the venue’s facilities, Corby said the club was looking forward to the huge turn-out for this weekend’s round.
The first round of the series was held at Cessnock, with this weekend’s second round in Orange to be followed by the remaining fixtures at Port Macquarie, Nowra and Appin, in the south west of Sydney.
Corby said the fact Orange was the only round west of the Blue Mountains spoke volumes for the course.
“There’s some pretty strict criteria you have to meet if you’re going to be able to host an event like this, and certainly over the last four years we’ve put a lot of work into the track and the facilities to ensure we’re of that standard,” Corby said.
“We’ve got riders from the Hunter and up the coast who are used to racing on national circuits that are wide enough, the jumps are big enough and long enough, and that’s what we have too.”
Practice will start at 9am on both days with racing to conclude at 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Corby said close to 70 per cent of the competitors at Newhaven Park this weekend will be from the Sydney basin area, while the majority of the rest will come from either the north or south coast.
There will be some Orange competitors turning heads too.
Among them will be Campbell Williams, who is currently running second in his bid for a state title.
“The smaller bikes, your 50cc, will be on show on Saturday with the bigger bikes, the 250cc, the 85s, they’ll all be on the Sunday,” he said.
“We’re expecting two days of quality riding.”
