Mrs Swain’s battle began in January 2014 when her doctor diagnosed her with the debilitating disease where white blood cells attack the central nervous system and cause damage to the lining around the nerves. This causes messages from the brain to muscles to be misinterpreted or not reach the destination at all.
At the moment Mrs Swain suffers a range of symptoms, including a lack of balance and fatigue on a daily basis.
Ever since that initial diagnosis Mrs Swain, her husband Tim and their four children have been determined to do all they can to fight the disease.
After looking at all of their options the Swains decided an operation and a course of treatment in Russia offered the best hope of finding a cure for Trudy.
The family soon realised they’d need the help of the Orange community if they were going to raise the enormous amount of money needed to fund the life-saving trip.
It didn’t take long for a group of Mrs Swain’s friends to join forces and stage a series of fundraising events.
They’ve already raised $40,000 and are on track to raise the $90,000 that’s needed. If they reach their fundraising target it will mean the Swains won’t be forced to sell their family home.
In fact The Trudy Tackles MS committee even has its own Facebook page and has organised two more fundraisers before Trudy and Tim go to Russia.
Mrs Swain admits she’s been overwhelmed by the support she’s been offered and the generosity of the people of Orange.
In a day and age when people are busy and money is tight, it’s reassuring to hear that the people of Orange have once again opened their hearts and their wallets to help someone in need.
