Cr Whitton said the master plan for the re-development of the site, which was unveiled yesterday, spells good news for the entire community, not just potential residents.
“It’s a fantastic outcome because it’s a real eyesore at the moment so the entire city will be grateful considering what’s there now,” he said.
“It’s not somewhere you’d particularly want to spend your free time.
“I think this development will fit into its surroundings particularly with council and planning staff having taken into consideration the history of the site.”
Cr Whitton said the master plan offers a range of different accommodation options suitable for people of all ages.
“I believed this master plan fills a demand in Orange for quality-style living close to the CBD,” he said.
“It will suit a range of demographics from single professional people to married couples, retirees and families.”
Cr Whitton said while there can be some “challenges” associated with people of different walks of life living so close together, he believes most residents will embrace the close-knit community feel the precinct will offer.
“I think the people who choose to live there, and seek out that style of living close to the CBD, will like its neighbourly feel.”
Cr Whitton said the master plan’s inclusion of plenty of green space is vital to the development’s success.
“If it’s going to attract all demographics, including children who need somewhere to play, it needs to have a place where people can congregate and enjoy the weather and being outside.”
