With more than 800 entries across a wide age range, it was a fitting curtain-raiser to National Youth Week and a great event to coincide with the school holidays.
The remainder of the week will be followed with smaller scale but no less important events. One of the key differences will be that young people have been active behind the scenes getting a varied program off the ground which goes beyond entertainment.
Many of the events blend entertainment with the opportunity for young people interested in youth activities to get involved in the organisation and staging of events.
It’s one thing to wish there was more for teenagers to do, it is quite another to be part of the process that culminates in a program of art and music workshops.
This year that is what lies behind the theme “It All Starts With US”, equipping some of the community leaders of tomorrow with the experience to bring their ideas to fruition.
National Youth Week provides a support network at the local level for young people to take the challenge of setting their own agenda for entertainment knowing there are mentors there to help.
It is a national program but it is also one that Orange City Council is heavily involved in. It knows that investing time and money in this group pays the same dividends as supporting any other age group.
Facilities and services which are shaped at least in part by the cohort who will use them are far more likely to be appropriate, popular and effective.
