THE problem for comedians these days is Prime Minister Tony Abbott, according to legendary Doug Anthony All-Stars (DAAS) frontman, Blayney-born, Tim Ferguson.

Ferguson paid a visit to his old stamping ground at All Saints’ College, where he completed some of his high school years, to share his comedic genius with Year 11 students and to promote a DAAS show at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) later this month.
At the height of the DAAS fame, 1984-1994, the acoustic trio wowed audiences in Australia and across the world with their quick-wit and provocative style.
They were well-known across the comedy circuit for their attacks on topical, controversial or taboo subjects.
Now battling multiple sclerosis, Ferguson said it was good to be back on the road and audiences can expect more from the trio than ever before.
“Those songs were like the gentle old days, we were tickling society under its chin,” he said of previous tours.
“The new songs are scarier, darker and filthier than they were before. The new show has some very frightening elements because fear and laughter go together, it’s the way our brains are matched up.”
DAAS reformed in 2014, following two one-off concerts in 2003 and 2013, with original member Paul McDermott, and Paul Livingston (aka Flacco) on board to replace Richard Fidler.
There are more things to poke fun at these days for comedians according to Ferguson, who said you only need to look at the country’s leader for inspiration.
“The Abbott government has been going out of it’s way to do comedians out of a job by things like Prince Philip [being knighted in the 2015 Australia Day awards],” he said.
“Comedians don’t have anything to say that was any funnier than that.”
Ferguson said the internet has also been a great source of comedic material.
“Certainly the world needs us and it needs comedians at the moment, comedians are probably more important than they ever have been, if only because people actually listen to us, they think that we’re offering something sensible,” he said.
The Doug Anthony All-Stars will appear at BMEC on Saturday, April 18.
