The Easter appeal, which normally collects 250 chocolate rabbits, rose above expectations with more that 1000 eggs donated by students this year.
Eggs were collected during roll-call classes over the two weeks before Easter and have been given to St Vincent de Paul Society’s Vinnies van to be distributed.
Sheridan House vice captain and member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) Joe Miller said the SRC’s goal was to receive one basket of eggs from the school’s six houses.
“It was a lot more successful than we expected. We were going to have a competition between the houses where we weighed each house’s eggs, but there’s just too many,” Joe said.
Joe said he believed students got behind the appeal because it combined friendly house rivalry and community-mindedness.
“One; it’s a good cause, and two; house spirit. People were drawn to it to beat the other houses, and to give to others who wouldn’t otherwise get eggs,” he said.
Student Representative Council (SRC) co-ordinator Keiron Hogan attributed the increase in donations to the way the drive was run.
“In the past, kids donated money and the SRC would go out and buy the eggs, but this year students could donate the eggs themselves,” Ms Hogan said.
The eggs will be distributed by the Vinnies van at its five locations on Wednesday night and at Vinnies cafe on Thursday.
