The act of doing so symbolises our concern for the planet and how global warming continues to affect the processes we depend upon for our existence.
We also need to reflect on the fact that it is because of us global warming is occurring , and it is our responsibility to do something about it.
We know that switching off lights won't save the planet. However, we can all do small things to create change, both within ourselves and within the communities in which we live. Here are four things you can do today.
Vote for the environment: Today is also the day of our state election.
Government policy dictates environmental decisions, so today is your chance to send an environmental message to government through your vote.
The big environmental issues in New South Wales that affect global warming are coal seam gas, renewable energy and coal mining.
As voters we can find out which of the three major parties has upfront policies and plans about what they intend to do about stopping the mining of coal seam gas, promoting the development of renewable energy and phasing out coal.
Buy the Earth Hour cookbook - Planet to Plate: As well as being a collection of the very best recipes from Australia's top chefs, Planet to Plate (pictured) is full of information about the effect global warming is having on our produce.
Planet to Plate contains firsthand stories from Australian farmers highlighting the impact global warming is having on their farms and the nation’s availability of fresh homegrown food.
It also contains general information about current effects of global warming.
Bendigo Bank, the major sponsor of Earth Hour is selling Planet to Plate at its office in Summer Street. Proceeds of sales will go towards supporting Earth Hour's work with schools, small businesses and community groups.
Visit the Agrestic Grocer: The Agrestic Grocer is an establishment that specialises in the provision of a wide range of locally grown produce, sourced directly from local growers.
The Agrestic Grocer is located just past the roundabout in the Molong Road. It is well worth talking to the proprietors, who are passionately enthusiastic about providing local produce, which as we know reduces food miles and promotes sustainable food production.
It is also worth inquiring about local products at the supermarket. If there are enough inquiries they may feel that it is worth it to them to stock local produce.
Come to our Earth Hour gathering: Join with the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange at the Orange Environmental Learning Centre for an Earth Hour gathering tonight starting at 7pm. This is a bring-your-own event with barbecue facilities provided.
We are going to entertain ourselves, so you have the opportunity to perform your “party piece” or just relax and enjoy the performance of others. A great opportunity to meet others who share your passion for the environment.
