UNDOUBTEDLY one of Australia’s greatest female, and overall, cricketers, former Southern Stars gun Lisa Sthalekar will headline Womensport and Recreation NSW’s Girls Get Active Day at Orange PCYC next Tuesday.

Learning from a player with a resume as impressive as Sthalekar’s - she played eight Tests, 125 One Day Internationals and 54 Twenty20s for Australia, and has two World Cup wins under her belt - is a rare opportunity afforded to few, but for the 150 high schools set to attend they get that, and much more.
The huge crowd will get the chance to learn from not only Sthalekar, but also from five more of Australia’s best past and present female sport stars.
Sthalekar will be joined by Commonwealth Games gold medal winning boxer Shelley Watts, Australian under 19 netball star Kaitlyn Brice, NSW and Indigenous All Stars front rower Eunice Grimes, All Australian forward Libby Sadler and Orange’s very own former Hockeyroo Jade Warrender.
“In conjunction with councils, Womensport NSW runs four of these events each year, two in Sydney and two in regional areas,” Womensport and Recreation NSW vice president Amanda Spalding said.
“Our mission is to promote access, participation and equity for women and girls through sport and recreation and these events help to do that, and show off the role models we have in women’s sport across the country.
“You can’t be what you can’t see, so these athletes will give the girls an insight into what it takes to get to the top level, and talk to them about getting into sport, or staying in sport and about living a healthy lifestyle as well.”
Those who attend will be privy to individual interviews with all six of the stars, and be able to ask their own questions of them. From there, the girls will be taken through skills development stations focusing on cricket, boxing, netball, Australian rules football, hockey, softball and rugby league.
“The (sporting stars) will take the girls through different aspects of each sport,” Spalding said.
“So there is some skill development there, to give the girls a taste of each of the sports. After that we’ll also be doing a visit to primary schools.”
