Mrs Oliver, 28, is one of several younger members of the Molong CWA branch and despite claiming not to excel at baking, won best pudding at the Central Western Group CWA Land Cookery Competition last Friday.
The competition involved women from seven branches but with mentoring from senior Molong branch members Mrs Oliver was able to hold her own, winning first place for a steamed fruit pudding and third place for a pear and ginger cake.
“They were my only two entries and it was amazing to place with both of them,” Mrs Oliver said.
“I’ve always said I’m a great cook but I’m not much of a baker, it just shows how much the [senior] women are willing to help us.”
The Molong Branch has about 20 members aged from 28 to 90 with about half in the younger set, who joined to keep the branch going.
“Basically the branch was going to close because the ladies that were there had been running it for years and had been part of the cause for a long time,” Mrs Oliver said.
“They are wonderful ladies but they are in their 80s and one of them is 90.
“The beautiful vintage set have been so giving of their time and experience and the only reason I won this competition was because Joyce Larkings, a previous state champion, took me under her wing and gave me her recipe.”
Mrs Oliver said the award-winning pudding was the third pudding she had made and she is going to freeze it now for Christmas.
She is also planning to make the pudding again to enter into the state competition that will be held at Tamworth in May.
