Greatbatch primarily refereed the men’s and women’s Elite Eight games, also at Coffs Harbour, and was rewarded for his consistency by being appointed to the mixed opens final between Sydney Rebels and Brisbane City Cobras.
He was then ranked number eight of the referees at the competition - essentially meaning he is the eighth best referee in Australia.
“I wanted to finish in the top 12, which I did, so yeah I’m pretty happy with it,” Greatbatch said.
“Honestly, I would’ve liked to finish in the top six, you know we all have those goals in our head.
“But when you’re playing with the big boys it’s tough to just bust your way straight in, and eighth gives me a good platform for the World Cup.”
The World Cup is launched on Friday, April 24, before several days of activities and trial matches. The Cup proper kicks off on Wednesday, April 29 and finishes on Monday, May 4.
Despite admitting he hasn’t thought about his goals, Greatbatch said he is hoping the international event spurs better weather than the NTL.
“I haven’t actually sat down and thought about it just yet, but I guess a final would be ideal,” he said.
“That would have me recognised as one of the best referees in the world, and is definitely a goal.
“I was pretty happy with my performance in general (at the NTL).
“If I was to pick one thing to improve on, I guess getting into the best position I can to make the best decisions is something I can work on leading into the World Cup.”
