The Orange Piranhas dominance over the Central West Inter-club Triathlon Series appears all but over ahead of the final round in Mudgee tomorrow, and Orange Cycle and Triathlon Club president Mick Lockyer is abundantly aware of it.
The Red Devils lead the Piranhas after the accumulated raw points were recalculated based on the number of members each competing club has over the age of 14.
The new rule - largely pushed by the Orange club - has shattered its five-year reign.
“We’ve become a victim of our own success,” Lockyer continued.
“Because of the way we have members join our club, we have 60 members who don’t live in Orange and won’t race in the inter-club.”
But nigh on all of those members count towards the amended score.
As the points stood after round three, and with 48 competing members over 14, Mudgee sits atop the ladder on 918.8 points.
The Piranhas are second on 841.1 (942 points, 112 members).
Bathurst sits in third place on 655.6 (236 points, 36 members) followed by Cowra on 626.1 (144 points, 23 members) and Dubbo on 217.5 (137 points, 63 members).
Mudgee’s final leg tomorrow will all but secure the Red Devils this year’s crown.
“But we’ll go up there in force,” Lockyer added.
“We’ll go up there still a chance. It’s a slim chance, but we’ll be a force up there regardless.”
The club won’t be without its high achievers through, with Orange triathletes set to dominate the women’s standings.
Lockyer even went as far as predicting all of the series female categories will be won by Orange women.
And Brian Sharp continues to re-write the rule book.
“They had to create an over 70s category for him ... he’s incredible. He makes you tired just watching him,” Lockyer said.
The final race of the season will be held in the grand prix format, with competitors starting with a 2km run at Lawson Park before tackling a 250m swim, 18km ride, 200m swim and then another 2km run.
Registration begins at 7.30am.
