In spite of a truncated preparation schedule, which runs into the start of the Blowes Clothing Cup, Hatch said several players’ reputations had already reached him ahead of the open trial.
“I’ve contacted all of the areas in the region and we’ve got a bit of interest by phone,” he said. “Nominations before the trial aren’t as strong as we’d like but we think a few will be coming on the day.
“Orange definitely had a lot of people interested, thanks in part to the colts traditionally being serviced by Orange coaches.
“But from last year some of the best players in the side came from smaller centres like Forbes and Parkes, so if you’re good enough, you’re in.”
After winning the Country title last year, Hatch is confident no matter who he chooses in the side will handle the pressure that comes with defending the crown.
“We’ve probably got six to eight guys from the squad last year who are eligible to play again and probably three return players who played NSW Country last year,” he said.
“And some of those returning guys are in key positions. We’ve got a five-eighth, a half-back, an inside centre and a fullback, so in terms of key positions in the back line we have got some key guys returning.”
Such is the skill level of several star colts, Hatch is concerned Central West first grade selectors will be interested in nabbing some of his younger players.
Hulking Orange Emus centre Jake Roberts has caused a stir since moving to the region and could slot into outside centre if he impresses at the trial according to the head coach.
“From what I have seen of the talent around there are some very classy individuals that could be picked in the team,” Hatch said.
“But my fear is because they are so good the first grade team might look at them. Riley Byrnes from Parkes has been touted by many good judges as the best five-eighth in the whole region and he’s only 20.
“So I could lose him to the first and the same goes for Roberts as well if he’s as good as people are telling me.”
