As the concrete slab for the building is set to be poured next week before foundations are built, fund chairman Russell Tym said now was the time for individuals and organisations to donate to the cause.
Between the $4 million provided by the federal government through the Community Development Grants Program and $2 million from Orange City Council, community donations will make up the remaining amount to finish the $7 million centre.
“We’ve got $6 million already accounted for, so the museum fund is looking to get $1.25 million in public fundraising,” Mr Tym said.
“The government grant requires us to raise that amount.
“In the coming year we will be looking at a few different fundraising ideas, trying to get the community involved in the project and raise interest in the museum.”
Orange and District Historical Society was the most recent organisation to donate to the fund, handing over $1000 on Thursday.
Society president David Sykes said members raised the money by hosting a barbecue at the November auction of historic homestead Yallungah at 62 Byng Street.
“Because we raised a reasonable amount, we thought it was important to be giving the money back to the community,” Mr Sykes said.
Mr Tym urged anyone interested in making a significant contribution to the museum to contact him on 6362 0333.
