This is what Orange’s Sam Ah-See is doing on his latest boxing camp in America.
The 23-year-old arrived at Los Angeles on January 16 this year and started training with former IBO world super featherweight champion Will Tomlinson.
As an added bonus, Justin Fortune, who has trained world champions like Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao, offered to work with Ah-See after only a week training with Tomlinson.
“I’m training twice a day,” Ah-See explained.
“In between sessions I’ll catch up with Will, go for a coffee and wait until the next session. I’m strictly here for business so there’s no room for pleasure.
“I’m here for another three weeks so I’m trying to get as much out of this trip as I can possible.”
This is the second time Ah-See has trained with Fortune after he impressed him at a previous camp.
“After the first training camp, I was impressed with his abilities,” Fortune told the Central Western Daily.
“Upon him coming over to train with me for this second training camp, he has been sparring world rated contenders over at Wild Card (Boxing Club) and definitely has the ability and desire to go a lot further in this sport. In my opinion, he is the best young new talent to come out of Australia.”
Fortune said he has been training Ah-See the same way he works with all his boxers but wouldn’t give away any of his secrets.
“Sam comes to this sport young, hungry, he’s got great speed and punches very hard for his weight class. Good chin, big heart,” Fortune said.
“Sam loves to fight and I think he will be a great asset to this sport.”
Fortune is also hoping to line up a fight for Ah-See before he returns to Australia on March 14.
While he has been training with Fortune, Ah-See has still been able to lean on Tomlinson.
“I’m trying to give him the guidance he needs,” Tomlinson explained.
“He’s definitely got the ability. He’s a naturally gifted athlete. He’s shown the drive and commitment it takes to be a good fighter. It takes a lot of drive and commitment to uproot your career and come over here to the big smoke. Hats off to him for having a crack.”
Ah-See said he is loving the opportunity.
“I’ve always wanted to be here and now I am, learning from the best and being in this environment, it doesn’t get much better than this,” he said.
Manny Pacquiao will start training with Fortune next month in preparation for his world welterweight title bout with Floyd Mayweather and Ah-See hopes he gets a chance to rub shoulders with the world champion.
Ah-See would like to extend his stay in the US but needs financial backing to do so.
