Proving a class above, Gray exploded in the final game of the weekend, dropping 46 points in the under 18 Eagles’ 97-80 win over Bathurst Blue, the Orange club’s fourth win from as many games to cap an unbeaten start to the 2015 season.
Simons was just as dominant for Orange in the under 14 premiership.
In two massive wins on Saturday - the Eagles defeated Dubbo 66-24 then Griffith 105-20 - the Australian Country representative centre dominated the post to chalk up a combined total of 72 points, before “backing off a bit” in two wins on Sunday against Young (75-12) and then Lithgow (78-23).
Coach Grant Cole said Simons, combined with Jay Cole and Ben Matthews, were simply unstoppable.
“There’s no one as big or as skilful as Zak in his age group,” Cole said.
“We could have played with the three of them and no one else and still won.”
On top of the under 18 and under 14 boys’ undefeated run, the Orange Eagles’ under 16 girls’ side also went through the opening four games of the year without a loss.
The Orange women defeated West Wyalong 73-46 before thumping Griffth and then Bathurst White by 53 points and 89 points respectively.
Fielding boys’ sides in every division and girls’ teams in each age group aside from the under 18s and under 12s, all of Orange’s teams began the year with at least one victory.
After three losses, the second division Eagles under 18 side defeated Bathurst White 59-56, the under 16 boys’ bettered Young (56-32) before losing to both West Wyalong and Bathurst Blue, while the under 12 boys’ division two outfit managed a strong, 60-8 victory over Bathurst White.
For the girls, the under 16 Eagles went through undefeated while the under 14 division two side dropped just one of its four games, defeating Narrandera (36-25), Leeton (39-35) and Bathurst White (44-25) to heavily outweigh an earlier 37-24 loss against a tough Dubbo team.
The Eagles’ teams now travel to the Riverina next month to take on sides from the southern region, namely Griffith, Leeton and Narrandera.
Cole was expecting similar results to the weekend just gone.
“If you look at it here, our region, Lithgow, Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, those kinds of sides have got much better competitions,” he added.
“West Wyalong do well though.”
Orange’s under 12 and under 18 teams play the second round on March 14 and 15, while the under 14 and 16 sides head to the Riverina on March 21 and 22.
