Music Fusion

Jazz meets classical when Andrew Robson - described by John Shand in the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘one Australia’s most vital saxophonists’ - and his quartet of Paul Cutlan on bass clarinet, James Greening on trombone and pocket trumpet as well as Brett Hirst on double bass play alongside the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra in their upcoming Central West tour to Lithgow, Bathurst and Forbes.

These concerts will feature an original and especially commissioned work called A New Folk Song Suite for Improvising Soloists and String Orchestra composed and arranged by Andrew as a follow up on his successful 2010 central west tour of his original work for jazz soloists and chamber orchestra the Tallis Suit,e which received standing ovations and praise from delighted audiences.

“Classical musicians and musicians performing in the jazz tradition actually have a lot in common as well as vast differences and this song cycle brings these two seemingly disparate elements together” says Andrew.

“The suite consists of four arrangements of traditional English and Scottish folk songs as well as four of my own pieces featuring soloists and chamber orchestra. These original compositions give the musicians room to move and improvise – and that includes the chamber orchestra!” he added.

Andrew Robson and his quartet return the Central West on Saturday, September 15, with a 2pm concert in Hoskins Church in Lithgow, 7.30pm concert in All Saints Cathedral Bathurst and in St John Church, Forbes on Sunday, September 16, at 2pm.

“We are thrilled to be able to host Andrew Robson and his quartet for this tour and the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra is looking forward to working with these jazz greats to create a performance that will live in the hearts and minds of both musicians and audiences alike,”
