Now in its fourth year, the competition’s meteoric rise continues with more teams playing than ever before this weekend.
Only Orange and Baulkham Hills contested the first competition in 2012, and with continued growth and development the 2015 HeartKids Cup will boast 13 teams across two divisions.
“It just keeps getting bigger,” event organiser and Orange shooter Mardi Aplin said. “We’ve got teams from all over the state coming again, and it is sure to be a very high-calibre competition again.”
Orange has a side in each division, as will Canberra and Tuggeranong, while 2014 champions Baulkham Hills will send three squads to compete.
The ACT under 21s, 19s and 17s will also be vying for the title, as well as south coast side Sapphire Coast.
Aplin said Baulkham Hills will again be the team to beat, with Orange and last year's runner-up ACT 21s also at short odds. She said the adapted rule of two-point goals, awarded for shots made from outside a second attacking circle, could play into Orange's hands.
"I'd like to think we're right up there with a chance," Aplin said.
"We've got a very strong side, but we haven't picked a ball up since the end of last season.
"So there's no warming up really, we need to be playing well from the outset. As do the other sides, you can't afford to coast in the group stages."
Baulkham Hills will run the LifeStudio junior clinic prior to the competition kicking off. The clinic runs from 9.30am-noon.
“Again there is a lot of high-quality players running the clinic,” Aplin said.
“Ex-Sydney Swifts players are in the there, they're are good players to be learning from. But also, for the girls who aren’t there yet, the kids could be watching them on television in the next couple of years.”
The HeartKids Cup competition kicks off at 1.15pm with the opening round of division two, before the top grade’s first games at 1.59pm - which includes Orange and Baulkham Hills’ city versus country clash at Orange PCYC.
