Wentworth takes on Wellington at Ex-Services and welcomes back Mitch and Matt Williamson, along with Mark Fliedner. The trio will join skipper Steve Bray and Jordan Clark in Wentworth’s line-up for round one.
“It will definitely help, we haven’t had the strongest of teams recently,” Bray said.
“Now we’ve got five blokes all playing off handicaps of less than five. We’ve got a couple of others as well who will play later on who are around the two or three mark.”
Mitch Williamson returns to Orange after a stint as Bathurst Golf Club’s trainee professional, while his brother Matt is the reigning Wentworth club champion.
“Mitch played pennants for Bathurst last year as well,” Bray said.
“And Matt came back and said he didn’t lose a match last year. I’m not sure what number he was playing but that’s a fair effort.”
Bray said while he knew little about the Wellington side, his team enters the opening clash confident thanks to their improved line-up and a home-town advantage.
“Obviously there isn’t any home rounds anymore, but I think we’d know the Ex-Services course a bit better than the Wellington guys,” Bray said.
“I don’t know much about them, but they used to be strong. We were in the other side, with Parkes and Forbes last year, so it’s good to have a change up.”
In the other division one pool A game Dubbo plays Mudgee, also at Ex-Services, while in pool B Cowra plays Bathurst and Forbes takes on Parkes at Duntryleague.
Reigning champion Duntryleague has the bye.
