Yesterday morning (AEDT) Belmonte qualified for the PBA Players Championship final after the last 16 games of matchplay at Wisconsin’s AMF Bowlero Lanes.
The two-handed bowler went into the second round of match play games in third position on a 4997 total for 20 games.
After another 16 match play games Belmonte held onto third spot with 9110 pins to qualify for the stepladder final scheduled for February 14.
“Really excited to say I was able to make the Professional Bowlers Association Players Championship TV show tonight,” Belmonte posted on Facebook.
“Was looking a little scary for a while then my tour rep Jim Callahan suggested to use a Hy-road and I made a great comeback the last few games to make it!”
In yesterday’s first round of eight match play games Belmonte enjoyed five wins.
This helped him move to second on the ladder on 7067 pins.
Ronnie Russell was the only bowler ahead of him on 7186.
Belmonte kept the momentum going in the next round of eight match play games where he scored another six wins, as well as a 279-all tie against Norm Duke.
Belmonte’s 9110 total qualified him in third for the final, with Parker Bohn III (9222) and Russell (9170) ahead of him, and Norm Duke (9107) and Tom Daugherty (9070) rounding out the top five.
“Congrats to Parker Bohn for leading. Watching him bowl tonight in particular was a sight! Had the ball on a string and repeated like a robot. Also congratulations to Ronnie Russell, Tom Daugherty and Norm Duke for also making the show!” Belmonte said.
“Now it’s time to start thinking about the doubles tournament starting tomorrow.”
Belmonte qualified in second spot with American Bill O’Neill for the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship match play rounds.
The doubles involves two six-game match play rounds Saturday morning (AEDT) after which the top five pairs will move into the final on February 15.
