The 44 petite pupils were the first of Orange’s kindergarten classes to begin, with the rest starting later this week and early next week.
When asked what they had learned on their first day, the students replied they now knew not to run in class, not to crawl on the ground and not to enter a classroom without a teacher, while the bubbler was a source of fascination as they lined up for a drink.
Teacher Nicola Harbison said the students had quickly picked up the letter A and using counting resources for future maths learning.
“They’re very happy, independent workers,” she said.
Principal Len Elliott said he was unaware the school was the first to commence kindergarten classes, but it was a big day for students and their parents.
“We get kindergarten and transition in a day or two early so it’s not too overwhelming and they can settle in without all the other kids in the playground,” he said.
“Everyone was excited and the parents were a little teary this morning as they dropped them off, but the kids come home in the afternoon.
“We hope that they’ll fit in and have fun, make the most of what they can be and grow.”
Kindergarten students from Canobolas and Clergate public schools, Kinross Wolaroi School and Orange Christian School start today, followed by Catherine McAuley and St Mary’s Catholic primary schools tomorrow, and most other public primary schools on Monday.
Orange East Public School kindergarten will start on Tuesday.
