Wagga divers will be on show at Orange Aquatic Centre in the 2015 Diving NSW Country Championships this weekend, along with some of the best divers from around NSW.
The fact several of the divers on show have been involved in national championships and School Sport Australia competitions shows the calibre of competitor the meet is bringing to the colour city.
Billed as a classic city versus country meet, divers from Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Albury, Lightning Ridge and Parramatta are set to make a splash, or not, depending on the quality of their dives.
“There’s plenty of action, a lot of quality divers from right across NSW,” Wagga head coach Karen Lucas said, including her son Sampson in the 11 years and under category, and daughter Madeline in the masters.
Competitors will dive from the one-metre and three-metre springboards, while Lucas was particularly excited to see the diving from the platforms in Orange, the five-metre and 10-metre heights.
“We have all ages and all abilities covered, and from the pathways [as young as five years old] level through to open level diving we should see some excellent competition,” she said.
How many dives each competitor will complete in each division depends on the age group, with the younger pathways divers to spring four dives while the open divers will complete upwards of eight.
Diving will continue throughout any rain. Only lightning will stop competition.
Competition starts today at 10.30am with the 16-18 years girls’ and boys’ one-metre category, and will kick off again at 9am tomorrow morning before concluding tomorrow afternoon.
