Flippers on for pool opening

The tiling is done, the pool is filled with water and from today swimmers will know if the 25 metre pool will be open to use tomorrow.

Council spokesman Nick Redmond said the commissioning of the pool is proceeding with the filtration and heating systems online and the cleaning and fit-out of the pool hall under way.

When the pool is open it will mark the final stage of the $7.2 million complex which has been plagued with delays.

“While the commissioning process will continue over the coming weeks, the centre is now ready for community use once the 25 metre pool reaches the required temperature,” he said.

“Public use of the facility is part of the commissioning process.”

Mayor John Davis said it was hard to say if the pool was over budget as council was still negotiating with the contractors.

“Councillors have been kept up to date thus far and there will a further report at the next council meeting,” he said.

The 50 metre outdoor pool was closed on Monday and a blend of warm water from the pool and cold water from the town supply was used to fill the new 25-metre pool.
