Ronald McDonald House executive officer Rebecca Walsh said the people of Orange and the central and far west have put in an incredible effort over 10 years to raise the $3.9 million so far to build the house, but a last minute effort is needed to see the dream realised.
“We just need a final push to get us over the line as we still have items to supply to the house before we can open the doors,” Ms Walsh said.
“I have no doubt once families begin using the house they will return home to spread the word about the magnificent facility but we just need that extra help now,” Ms Walsh said.
This week Orange resident Erin Marsden and her nephew Cooper Gallagher aged 6. arrived at the house with donations for the kitchen.
“I go to the Ronald McDonald Ball every year to give my support as it is such a wonderful thing,” Ms Marsden said.
“I can’t believe this house - it’s amazing,” she said.
Ms Walsh said the fitting out of the house and unpacking and assembling furniture has been a mammoth task for Orange’s small group of volunteers who make up the board of Orange’s RMH.
“We still don’t have the money to buy television sets, and we still need money for more bedding, some information technology equipment and utility items,” Ms Walsh said.
Ms Walsh said while no formal fundraising committees have been set up in the central and far west so far individuals, organisations and community groups have approached the Orange board of RMH with donations.
She said chair of the board Joanne Lewis hopes to talk with mayors from regional towns and cities at the next Centroc meeting in March to lobby for ongoing support from communities to cover the annual running costs of the house.
She’s also hoping to get funding for the second stage of the house comprising an extra 12 family rooms that will be added to the existing eight family rooms.
