The shelter’s fundraising committee member Debi Egli said the trip was the first of its kind for the shelter and possibly for Orange, and quite different to their annual Million Paws Walk and cupcake stall fundraisers.
“As far as we can tell, no one has a day trip that goes from Orange to Parkes,” Mrs Egli said.
“It’s for everybody who has ever wanted to go out to the festival but hasn’t had the chance or didn’t want to drive there and back. I think you’ve got to go to the Elvis festival at least once in your lifetime.”
Funds raised from ticket sales for the trip will go towards the regular upkeep costs of the shelter.
The committee is hoping to send two busloads to Parkes and is already a few seats off filling one bus.
“It’s one great big party. We’re going to have fun on the way up, fun on the way back, we’ll even have a karaoke sing-along on the bus,” Mrs Egli said.
“We’re going on the Saturday, which is the biggest day of the festival. There’s the street parade which goes for at least an hour-and-a-half.”
Other free entertainment on January 10 includes a busking competition, festival markets, photographic exhibition, edible art competition, See The Stars at The Star, Cars of the Era show, films Roustabout and Elvis Lives In Parkes and all-day entertainment at the Memphis Satellite Stage, Cooke Park Stage, The Carnival Lounge and The Elvis Lounge.
The Hound Dog Day Trip costs $50 per person, departs from the Orange City Council Chambers at 7.30am, and will return to Orange from Parkes at 5pm.
