The Islamic Council of Victoria condemned the actions of the Sydney gunman and said the community is in "deep shock" following the deadly end to the hostage crisis on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for the peak body representing Muslims called for the broader Australian community to work together in the "spirit of peace" during a time when the nation grieves.
"We are still reeling from the shock of how these events have unfolded and we send our condolences to the victims of this tragic incident. We pray for the families and hope that they are being supported in this terrible time. Our focus should remain on the victims and our wishes, prayers and thoughts should be with them in this time of need," Kuranda Seyit said in a statement.
ICV plans to hold a special gathering at its West Melbourne office at 7pm on Tuesday.
Mr Seyit said ICV have been speaking with partners in government, police and interfaith organisations and it strongly condemned "this and any act of violence perpetuated against innocent people".
It follows comments on Monday from the Australian Islamic Mission's Victorian secretary Dr Seyed Sheriffdeen, who said Man Haron Monis "hijacked" the message of Islam.
"The message of Islam has been hijacked and spoiled by these people. These sorts of acts have never been accepted by Muslims or by Islam," Dr Sheriffdeen said.
"If they carry the flag of Islam, it does not mean they belong to the Islamic ideology. I don't want the Muslim community to be victimised."
There has been an outpouring of solidarity on social media to show support for the Muslim population.
The hashtag #illridewithyou hashtag amassed almost 120,000 tweets on Monday evening.
