The award was named after Lorna Cumming, a violinist in the Australian Chamber Orchestra, who died in a motorbike accident in Canberra 18 months ago.
Ms Cumming’s sister Doreen started the Strings on Sampson violin school in Orange this year and said she named the award after her sister to keep her name alive in violin playing in Australia.
Her brother and father attended the inaugural concert to present the award for excellence in music.
Ms Cumming said Mr McLaren demonstrated excellence by coming first in music at St Stanislaus College in the HSC this year and receiving 97 per cent for his HSC performance piece.
He also performed a double concerto in a concert at a Sydney Symphony workshop this year.
“All in all it’s been a pretty good year for him,” Ms Cumming said.
There were 30 students, from beginners to experienced musicians, who performed in the inaugural concert in front of an audience of 80 people.
Seven half-scholarships for tuition next year were also presented to Lachlan and Caleb Cairns, Teegan Mackay, Mia Retallack, Kiri Vijayakumar, Tom Blowes, Elizabeth Palmer and Harriet Ringbauer.
