Western Sydney Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer labelled a potential move of future Sydney derbies to ANZ Stadium as, at best, a "necessary evil" but says it does not address the long-term issue of the Wanderers need for a new stadium.

Lederer is pushing for a complete reconstruction of Pirtek Stadium, to create a modern 32,000 to 35,000 seated football stadium and says negotiations to move Sydney derbies to the Olympic venue highlight the necessity of a new stadium in Sydney's west.

The Wanderers chairman is in the process of lobbying the state government for between $120 million and $150 million in funding to rebuild their entire stadium. Lederer has already completed two separate funding models for a modern rectangular stadium involving in put from those responsible for the construction of Emirates Stadium in London. It will include state-of-the-art corporate and hospitality facilities, restaurants, playing surface and player facilities. Currently, Pirtek Stadium is scheduled to undergo $29 million upgrades which includes the capacity being raised by up to 4000.

The Football Federation of Australia this week confirmed they are in discussions with both Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers about the possibility of holding one neutral derby at the 83,000-capacity venue next season with both clubs to share the gate receipt. Neither the Wanderers or Sydney FC are prepared to move their scheduled hosting derby away from their home grounds and Lederer believes the pressure to do so doesn't address the long-term issue of the club out-growing their home stadium.

"Our fans pretty well insist that we play at Pirtek Stadium, our fan base is in that area. For us to move to ANZ or anywhere else, I don't think it makes much sense. It could  be a necessary evil but I think it is the wrong call," Lederer said.

The Wanderers sold 19,000 memberships this season and now have a waiting list for future applicants. For the upcoming Sydney derby, only 3500 seats were available for public purchase including a designated section for away fans accounting for 1200 seats. Based on the current growth in memberships, Lederer expects demand for season tickets to swell to over 25,000 within five years reinforcing the club's necessity for a larger stadium.

"We're a community-based club and we're proud of the area. We owe it to our fans to have the best facilities we can. Currently, our facilities are - how can i put this nicely - was probably good 50 years ago," Lederer said.
